work follows the life of the authors mother, a woman who broke from tradition to have children with the man that she loved. James McBride and Ruth McBride Jordan are
the primary focus of the book. James is the narrator, and Ruth is his mother. The book begins with a bit of background on Ruth, who defiantly married a
black man, ignoring the traditions of her Jewish Polish culture. There are similarities and differences between the two characters of James and Ruth. Obviously, a man and his mother will
have many differences. Gender alone distinguishes them, at least to an extent. However, there are obviously some similarities in terms of character traits. Both are renegades on some level as
they defy tradition and break the rules. In general, both Ruth and James have strong personalities. Another similarity is that both Ruth and James are open and honest. Throughout their
lives, both individuals lived in a way that was above board. When Ruth needed help, she freely admitted it. She in fact went back to her Jewish family and asked
for assistance (McBride, 246). She lived with grace and courage, and this is a similar way to how James lived. He has always been honest and open, and perhaps this
is a reflection of how he was raised. While true, there is a stark difference and that is race. Ruth is white
and while James is biracial, he is considered non-white, which creates friction in society. McBride writes: "As a boy I was confused about issues of race but did not consider
myself to be deprived or unhappy....Yet, I laughed bitterly at the white kids in ragged jeans who frolicked on the campus lawn tossing Frisbees and went about campus caroling in
