surprise that when Steven Spielberg decided to do the film, many wondered whether or not he could pull it off. After all, he is a white male and the film
is about black women. Yet, it seems that he has done a satisfactory job. At the same time, the most significant criticism is that it excludes one of the most
important aspects of the film, which is that it is above all, a film about lesbian love. Much of the film can be viewed without ever wondering about the sexuality
of Celie. Of course, there are shocks. There is kissing, but the intensity of the commitment between Celie and Shug is not there. In both the film and the novel,
Celie is mistreated by men, but the idea that she is a lesbian is not really expressed equally in each of the mediums. In the book, it is an important
part of the tale. In fact, the author herself would comment that the kiss between Celie and Shug, while significant in the book, is played down in the film (Jacinda).
It is also juxtaposed to many women kissing, but the point of the film is that the protagonist is a homosexual. Whether that evolves because the men in the film
are misogynist or because it is something that is a part of Celie, is unclear. Still, it seems that the author has been critical of the Spielberg film because of
that aspect. Many of the other parts of the film are true to the original book and the authors intent. Still, the omission is large as it takes always some
