systems, were deleterious and have almost annihilated many of the traditional components of African life. Background The first intense movement by Europeans into Africa was made by the
French into Algeria and Senegal during the 1830s (Marshall 37). The sub-Saharan colonization did not occur until after 1850 (Marshall 37). The incoming Europeans penetrated deeper and deeper
inland and at times would encounter resistance from those who were in power. At the same time, however, these European interlopers were sometimes welcomed by those who were subordinated.
Between 1880-1905 most of Africa had been claimed by one European nation or another. European colonization has, for the most part, resulted in significant social and political changes that
endured well after colonial rule ended. The predominance of the English language in most of these regions is just one example of an obvious change that has endured.
Many of the changes have, in fact, been good. Others, unfortunately, have been bad. Consider Nigeria as a more specific example. Nigeria has been the recipient
of many positive benefits from Europe but her traditional cultures have been the target of aggressive missionaries and others with "good intentions" practically since the arrival of the first White
to the country. The changes which have been incurred are reflected in practically every aspect of Nigerian culture. Cultural behavior in Nigeria in many ways both reflects day-to-day living
and is a reflection of day-to-day living. It, like any cultural behavior, encompasses such things as ideology, morals rituals, codes of ethics, technology and elements of material culture
