Psychological counseling employs a number of approaches in allowing
a patient to overcome behavioral problems. One particularly important approach is the cognitive-behavioral approach. The utility of this approach can be demonstrated in a number of ways.
One of the most exemplary of these, however, is the use of cognitive-behavioral counseling in regard to addressing human performance and the occurrence of errors. This counseling approach can
be employed in a number of diverse arenas. After all, errors permeate practically every arena of human activity. Some of these areas, however, seldom jump immediately to mind
when we think of psychological counseling. Never-the-less, the employment of this type of counseling in several of these arenas has the potential to pay off in improved behavioral-cognitive functioning
and even in human welfare overall. Flight school, for example, might be a particularly applicable arena for cognitive-behavioral counseling, the application of which could feasibly alleviate cognitive-behavioral problems in pilots
and ultimately translate into saved lives through a reduction of pilot error. Errors, of course, occur on an everyday basis. Some errors
are minor but others can have disastrous consequences. Some can even lead to increased learning, i.e. "trial and error" learning (Neville, 2001), Given the potential of errors, either
positive potential or catastrophic potential, psychologists have undertaken the task of determining why they occur. The factors which enter into errors range from the physiological to environmental. The
role of cognitive psychology is determining the basis of errors so that they might be minimized, or even abolished. Reason (1990) defines the term "error" as"
