"The closing of the American mind" is quite scathing of the way American traditions have changed and are reflected in modern students. Bloom (1988) looks back to the past
and considers the differences been European and American Students at age 18. The argument is that the cultural and mental developments are at different stages. While the Europeans have already
learned a great deal of their culture and have developed ideas by the time they are 18, the American student shave not. This leads to a different attitude in the
students and their views of learning are different. The American students are seen as the blank slate, it is not that they have not had an education, but the type
of education differs; when they enter university that do not know their inner selves. While European students have been exposed to the great thinkers of their culture and have been
drilled in the ideas and explored the concepts that are inherent in this as part of their culture, the American may appear to be like savages with their lack of
knowledge. The European model of learning, Bloom argues, places the culture into the soul of the student, so the American may be seen as lacking this soul. However, their
lack of exposure to the great works and ideas also means that when they are exposed to them there can be a great relish for learning and an embracing of
the ideas. This is an enthusiasm that is not seen in the Europeans who by the time that are 18 may be seen as jaded and used to the ideas.
They are denied that same ability to grow and embrace the learning at this stage; instead they will embrace other new ideas. This is almost a naivety that was a
