There were many circumstances that combined to eventually cause the outbreak of the bloodiest war in American history. That war
was the American Civil War. This war was fueld by the issue of slavery but the fact is that fight over slavery was really just a reflection of a
much larger fight, the fight for states to control their own affairs. The Civil War resulted after years of growing tension between the
North and the South. In the decades leading up to the wars outbreak the southern states had become more and more suspicious of the northern states intentions in terms
of interceding in what were regarded as southern affairs. The northern states suffered from similar paranoia. Some believed that the southern states were involved in a conspiracy to
destroy northern liberty. The years leading up to the Civil War were a time of considerable tension between the
northern and southern states. These tensions can actually be traced back to the early 1800s and the request from Missouri that she be admitted to the Union. This
request was made in 1817. Because Missouri was a slave state, the question over her admittance was a critical one. At the time the scale was essentially balanced
