ideals of President Lincoln, are two very interconnected conditions in the history of the United States. If Lincoln were not the president at the time of the discord it is
unknown what direction the nation would have taken and today the nation may well be two separate nations, or one very different nation. There is really no way to know
what the nation would be like today if any other man besides Lincoln had been President of the United States at the time, but one can still examine his role
and how he clearly made a difference. The following paper examines the cause and issues of the Civil War, and then presents personal opinion. The Civil War and
Abraham Lincoln The Civil War was not a war that was started over the issue of slavery in the nation, although many people assume this was the initial and the
most powerful element of the war. The war, or the coming of the war, involved slavery but was not based around slavery. Slavery was just one of the things that
made some states different than others, thus leading to further illustrate different ideals as well as different politics and economic systems. The main element that was threatening the nation, as
a whole, and pushing the new nation to war was division. The South wanted to diverge, secede, from the Northern states and become their own entity in their own
