Many, however, related to differences between the southernmost states and the northernmost states of our country. One of the most often touted reason, of course, is the issue
of slavery. In actuality, however, slavery was only one of many factors that ultimately resulted in war between the states. The North was distinct from the South in
a variety of ways. Demographic differences were obvious, as were differences in the degree of agricultural verses manufacturing pursuits. The intent of this paper is to discuss two
specific counties of the United States (Franklin County Pennsylvania and Augusta County Virginia) in regard to these differences, how these differences translated into distinct political concerns, and how each of
these counties changed between 1860 and 1870. In the years leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War, Augusta County Virginia and
Franklin County Pennsylvania were actually more similar than they were dissimilar. Both were largely rural areas with a considerable portion of their income coming from agricultural activities as opposed
to manufacturing pursuits. Indeed, even the relative sizes of these two counties are similar. Augusta County Virginia encompasses approximately 971 square miles and Franklin County Pennsylvania encompasses approximately
772 square miles. Despite their similarity in size, however, Franklin County was populated more densely in 1860 than was Augusta County. According to US Census data, the number
of people in these counties in 1870 that couldnt read or write was not significantly different between the two counties (Historical Census Browser, 2004).
