war where neighbor fought neighbor and brother fought brother. There is a painful division of families and friends just as there is a division of the North and the
South. In such boarder states as Illinois, which has neighboring states of Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee, part of the state fought with the South and part fought with the
North. For example, those from southern Illinois considered themselves a part of the South, while many in the northern part of the state believed in supporting the cause of
the Union, or Northern cause. Families were deeply rooted in tradition. The Civil War tore that tradition apart and caused many to question their affiliations. It was
difficult for families to understand the opposing views of their relatives and more difficult still, to go into battle knowing that their friends, neighbors, and even their own brothers were
the "enemy." Many important places and events led to the Civil War. According to Horn, Boston is important in the study of
the Civil War. It was in Boston that the abolition movement was began. In fact, the movement was headquartered in Boston. This city was one that contained
support for the freedom of slaves. The slaves of Massachusetts had been freed in 1783 (48). After that time, a large community of free Blacks were amassed in
the Boston area, and Boston "was the center of some of the most vocal protests against slavery and of the most enthusiastic support for the Union cause" (Horn 48).
