The civil rights movement essentially began with Rosa Parks, who refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white person. While this was clearly not the motivation for an entire movement, it was indeed the catalyst for a people who were already burdened with discontent. The civil rights movement emerged and with it brought leaders such as Martin Luther King to the forefront of not just this movement but to the national political forefront as well. There was no way to deny the importance of this movement or to ignore issues which had long been overlooked. Essentially, this movement was about creating equality for all races, based on non-discrimination. America heard the pleas of these leaders and responded. In time, the civil rights movement effected much change. While leaders in the black community today still fight for more change, there has clearly been advances in regards to the equal treatment of African Americans. While there can be no denying that more progress in required, there is also no denying that because of the civil rights movement, no black woman will ever again be forced to sit in the back of the bus. Therefore, the obvious conclusion in regards to the civil rights movement is that it was indeed responsible for changing the lives of African Americans and doing so in a dramatic and drastic way.
