this way, this gives us some insight into how we come to understand history - it is through the perceptions of the revelations of those historians who have recorded such
history. American literature and culture is replete with examples of the fabrication of individual and collective memories. One specific example
of this is the The Civil Rights Memorial located in Montgomery, Alabama, which is a poignant reminder of the human costs of the Civil Rights movement in this country (Harmon,
2002). The purpose of this memorial is to remind all people of just how difficult it was for African Americans to achieve freedom and equality in this country (Harmon,
2002). Forty names are carved into the black granite table that is the centerpiece of this Memorial (Harmon, 2002). The forty names are those of individuals who died,
"so that others might be free" (Harmon, 2002). It is important to understand however that this memorial represents one perception of
the reality of the civil rights movement. In this way, it becomes an everlasting record however of the event, thus immortalizing this particular viewpoint. With the design and
implementation of the Civil Rights Memorial, there becomes a relinquishing of other realities related to this subject, and that reveals the means by which Americans construct usable pasts.
