River that flows through England and in fact, when William Blake wrote a poem about London, he introduces it with a reference to the once polluted, but now somewhat cleaned
up river. However, Blakes "London" ends as follows: But most thro midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlots curse
Blasts the new-born Infants tear And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse (Blake PG) The end of the poem brings up images of the dangerous streets everyone has
heard about in Oliver Twist and also the reference to harlots standing on the street corners at midnight brings up flashes of the Jack the Ripper story. In fact, the
Ripper was thought to be a physician who would disembowel prostitutes on Englands streets. Blake does not paint a quaint picture with his work, but does bring up a time
and a place and an aura that belongs only to London. Other poets have focused attention on the city. Wordsworth wrote a poem by the same title that begins:
Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour: England hath need of thee: she is a fen
