York with an initial membership of 56 men and women (Wikipedia, 2005). Within the church, members are known as Latter Day Saints (Wikipedia, 2005). Members believe the Mormon faith is
the restoration of Christianity, the Church that was established by Jesus Christ (Wikipedia, 2005). They believe that after the Apostles all died, the church suffered persecution causing it to change
far from that established by Christ so that by the fourth century, the church entered a long period of spiritual darkness, a time period called the Great Apostasy (Wikipedia, 2005).
However, in 1820, God and Jesus Christ, His Son, appeared to Joseph Smith, a boy of 14 at the time (Wikipedia, 2005; LDS, History, 2005; Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 2000). They
directed Joseph to restore the Church, they also directed Smith to not join any existing church (Wikipedia, 2005; LDS, History, 2005). Smith was to be "the first prophet of the
restored Church" (Wikipedia, 2005; LDS, History, 2005). Smith claimed further visitations and revelations during the following decade until on April 6, 1830, the Church Christ was officially organized (Wikipedia, 2005;
LDS, History, 2005; Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 2000). Some of the other visitations included the angel Moroni, who advised Smith of the Book of Mormon record and where the gold plates
were buried in 1823, and John the Baptist, "who conferred the Aaronic Priesthood on Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery in Harmony, Pennsylvania" (Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 2000). Smith and Cowdery subsequently
"received the chizedek Priesthood from Peter, James, and John near the Susquehanna River" (Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 2000) in May 1829 (Intellectual Reserve, Inc., 2000). During the revelations, Smith and Oliver
