that is just what Sister Prejean did, when she began her correspondence with a man on death row. She wrote of that experience in her novel Dead man walking, which
was made into a high successful film. This paper considers these questions in regard to her work: how would we evaluate the Christian imperative to love in the context of
the book, and how might American policy change if her concerns are considered? Discussion Dead man walking is a difficult book to read, because it forces us to confront many
of our own prejudices. Certainly we have to take another look at where we stand on the death penalty, and sometimes its hard to examine our beliefs in case we
are forced to change them, a difficult task for anyone. Then too, we discover that the man to whom Sister Prejean is asked to write is a monster: Elmo Patrick
Sonnier "and his younger brother, Eddie, abducted from a lovers lane a teenage couple, David LeBlanc and Loretta Bourque. They raped the girl, forced the young people to lie face
down, and shot them in the head. I look down at the name in horror. Do I really want to know such a man?" (Prejean, 1994). That indeed is a
very good question, because loving in the Christian tradition means more than making pleasant conversation and occasionally saying hello; it means becoming actively involved with another person, and that puts
