we have three stories of young men who are learning something incredibly valuable. In many ways they are coming of age stories. The following paper presents a comparison of the
three stories. Coming of Age In Robert Cormiers "The Chocolate War" we have the story of a young man who decides to rebel against the system. He decides
that he will not take part in the annual chocolate sale and a secret society, that is in charge of the annual sale, decides that this young man, Jerry, is
in grave error. They essentially see him as a threat to their organization, believing that if he does not take part then soon others will rebel as well. Jerry is
ridiculed, beaten, and abused. He becomes an outcast. In this story we obviously see that Jerry is seeking his own path, his own mind, and coming of age in his
depth and understanding. The society, however, does not see it this way and they are angered by his independence. It becomes obvious that this particular story is clearly a
statement about society in general, or a society whose members are controlled. If one person steps out of line and notes that the way things are done is not the
only way to do things, or that individuality is just as important as prosperity, then the whole structure falls apart. The secret society, the Vigils, see this and attacked Jerry
in many ways. But, Jerry remains strong and comes of age in a very powerful and enlightened manner. In Lois Lowrys "The Giver:" we are given an entire society that
is built around control. In the story we see Jonas, a young boy who is waiting for his ceremony celebrating his 12th birthday. His life seems perfect in a perfect
