hundreds, if not thousands, of parasitic organisms in the world that prey on mankind. One of these organisms is the Chinese River Fluke. Despite its name, the Chinese
River Fluke occurs throughout much of Asia. Also commonly known as a liver fluke, it is found not just in China but also in Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
It is just one of several flukes that are of very real concern in terms of their impact to human health. The purpose of this paper is to describe
the Chinese River Fluke in relation to other parasitic flukes, to describe its life cycle, to describe the method of transmission, the symptoms, and diagnostic considerations.
Phylogenetically, river flukes belong to the family Opisthorchiidae and the Class Trematoda (Yossepowitch 2122). This Class is composed entirely of parasitic organisms. Three
specific organisms are of particular concern to mankind. These are Opisthorchis viverrini, O. felineus, and Clonorchis sinensis and collectively these species are responsible for 17 million infestations around the
world (Yossepowitch 2122). Clonorchis sinensis, the Chinese River Fluke, is responsible for seven million of those infestations (Yossepowitch 2122).
