The topic of immigration in the U.S. is one that is clouded with many misperceptions. On the one hand we announced to the world that here was
a land of opportunity for all and on the other we enacted policies and laws that forbade or tightly controlled the entrance of some people into the U.S. Despite
the well-known proclamation of: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to
breathe free". -Emma Lazarus the proclamation found in
the much quoted poem "The New Colossus" as well as inscribed on the base of the Statute of Liberty, American immigration policy has been quite restrictive at certain points in
our history. While the proclamation was descriptive of our immigration ideology at that time, it diverged radically from our policies and law. There were many examples of these
policies and laws. From an Asian perspective, the Chinese Exclusion Act that was levied in the nineteenth century is of particular interest yet that Act was just one more
reflection of the prejudice that shaped our immigration policy as a whole. Our policies in regard to immigration originally were intended
to provide a haven for those individuals fleeing persecution and those seeking to better themselves (Ogletree, 2001). Another initial consideration of immigration policy was the provision of labor for
our growing country (Ogletree, 2001). Consequently, the U.S. as a nation has received more immigrants than any other country in the world (Takaki, 1994). Most of these immigrants,
