morality and comments that a number of diverse disciplines of study have begun offering a new way to study such things, one that focuses "on structures, forms and relationships that seem to be common to all societies and all languages" (Kohlberg, 1968, p. 24). He says that he developed his own theory based on Piagets efforts to establish a structure to moral development. Most, if not all educators, have heard of Kohlbergs stages of moral development. What they may not know is that Kohlberg and his colleagues conducted a 12-year longitudinal study of 75 boys. Furthermore, they researched the issue of moral development in several other countries and cultures. Knowing this may add more validity to Kohlbergs schema. As with most theorists, Kohlbergs thoughts and ideas progressed over years and his structure was modified along the way. He determined there are three levels of moral thinking and each of these levels is comprised of two levels. He says that each of these "may be considered separate moral philosophies" (Kohlberg, 1968, p. 24). Each represents a distinct way of viewing the socio-moral world. In this article, Kohlberg makes it very clear that most people, even professionals, do not think about the moral development of children correctly. Most believe that children simply adopt and internalize the standards they are taught by their parents but Kohlberg found that children make moral judgments in ways that have nothing to do with adopting or internalizing adults standards. Each level and stage will be very briefly reported here: Level 1: Preconventiaonl level: Kohlberg (1968) suggests this level applies to children between 4 and 10 years old and is about being well-behaved (p. 24).
