and military traffic. This paper discusses its history, layout, its accident and incident record, environmental issues and any planned construction or expansion. Discussion History: Before the Douglas Airport was built
there were few flights to and from Charlotte since it had only one airfield, Charlotte Airport, which was owned and operated by aviator Johnny Crowell (Sumner, 2002). This small airstrip
was opened with great ceremony on April 1, 1930, as an airmail stop; a few months later, Eastern Airlines, then known as Eastern Air Transport, began passenger service there (Sumner,
2002). Despite this patronage, Charlotte Airport, later renamed Cannon Airport, was open only on "weekends, for air shows, and war-pilot training" (Sumner, 2002). The mayor of Charlotte at the time
was Ben E. Douglas, and he had a vision for Charlotte; the inadequate airfield didnt fit into it because he knew it wouldnt provide the transportation hub the city needed
(Sumner, 2002). Douglas "lobbied" the citizens of Charlotte until he had the support he needed to press for a new airport, a rarity at a time when commercial air travel
was in its infancy (Sumner, 2002). In 1935, "the Chamber of Commerce appealed to the City Council to provide adequate passenger and airmail service to and from the city" (Sumner,
2002). Later that year, Mayor Douglas and the Charlotte City Council authorized the City Manager "to file an application with the Works Progress Administration for funding to build an airport"
