What differences and similarities are found in these two characters? Who is more responsible for his tragic demise? In "Things fall Apart," Okonkwo is the protagonist and has spent his
life ignoring his fathers legacy. His father was not a good citizen and Okonkwo is, to some extent, ashamed of him. Yet, despite Okonkwos good reputation, he gets himself into
a dilemma where he has to choose whether or not to kill a boy who is like a son to him, just to please the elders. As if karma was
instant and extreme, Okonkwo seems to be punished by universal forces. He does more questionable things. It seems that his participation in the murder is too much for him to
bear, things go downhill and he ultimately commits the most shameful act in his own suicide. The Sophocles work is similar. The story of Oedipus Rex simply includes the
dictum that it is fated this individual would grow up, kill his father, and marry his mother. In reality, few people would ever find themselves in such a circumstance. The
traditional nuclear family that sees children and two parents might see a son murder his father, but marrying his mother would be against the law. It would be an impossibility,
no matter what the prediction, that this would happen. However, in the case of Oedipus, he is adopted. He grows up not knowing who his real mother and father are,
and as fate would have it, he does end up fulfilling the prediction. There is much irony in Oedipus Rex. The parents of the King, when he was born,
were aware of his fate and so gave him away. In the end, he ends up unknowingly killing a man who happens to be his real father. He marries a
