Things Fall Apart, is the tale of nine Ibo-speaking tribal villages (with particular emphasis on Umuofia, which is Ibo for people of the forest) in the nation now known as
Nigeria just prior to the arrival of the white man in Africa. It is a story heaped in ancient tradition, which is represented by the novels chief protagonist, Okonkwo,
a proud man who "brought honor to his village" (7). He was a warrior whose fierce physical prowess hid his "fear of failure and of weakness" (16). Okonkwo
had a clear vision of what a hero should be, and dedicated his life to embodying what he perceived as heroic characteristics. This single-minded pursuit of heroism, which was
as necessary to Okonkwos character as air, sowed the seeds to his eventual downfall. According to author and Ibo (also spelled Igbo) clansman Patrick C. Nnoromele, "A hero, in the
Igbo cultural belief system, is one with great courage and strength to work against destabilizing forces of his community, someone who affects, in a special way, the destinies of others
by pursuing his own. He is a man noted for special achievements. His life is defined by ambivalence, because his actions must stand in sharp contrast to ordinary
behavior. So a hero is not made in isolation; rather he is a product of the social matrix within which he operates" (146). This was the prototype by
