The characters in this story all face situations which challenge their happiness, until they realize (or not as the case may be) that their happiness is internal as opposed to something which will arrive at some mythical point in the future. It is indeed interesting to see the complexities of the characters in this book, as each possess certain traits and qualities which serve to reveal certain aspects of other characters. One important example is that of Jim OConnor, who plays the role of Lauras "gentleman caller". Jim is an interesting character - one whom most readers can relate to. In high school, he was a big shot and a hero, but as time and life have passed, the reality is that he is just an ordinary man. Laura had a "crush" on him in high school, and now pins all her hopes for happiness on him again. What is particularly important about the relationship between Laura and Jim is that Jim continues to be insensitive to Laura, but she still believes that he is her path to happiness. When Jim comes over for dinner on that fateful evening, he is in several instances cold and behaves selfishly. The climax of this sort of behavior comes when he reveals that he isnt interested in Laura after all, and that he is actually engaged. Clearly this reveals just how self-centered he actually is and how thoughtless he is of Laura and her feelings. And yet, Laura is devastated by Jims news. If ...
