death in the world of literature. It is a story that takes the reader into the depths of dying, and the loneliness and meaninglessness of ones life, in this case
the life of Ivan Ilych. The following paper analyzes one of the characters in the story, discussing his role. The character is Gerasim and he is perhaps the only character
who demonstrates compassion and kindness in the face of Ivans impending death. The Character of Gerasim in The Death of Ivan Ilych The story of Ivan is a
very depressing one for he is a man who learns he has really done nothing with his life as he lies dying. And, to make matters worse it seems that
no one really cars that Ivan is dying. In some ways it appears as though the people around him are simply wishing he would get it over with. In
understanding who Gerasim is, and what his role is, it is important to understand other characters first. In understanding the other characters the man who is Gerasim makes more sense.
In one example there is the character of Peter Ivanovich. He is one of those "people in Tolstoys novella.... who shirk serious personal matters, and to whom confrontation is so
unpleasant an endeavor that they simply dispense with it as hastily as possible; they make small talk as effortless as eye-blinking" (Spalding). Peter, and others, are simply happy that it
is Ivan who is dead and not them (Spalding). Spalding further illustrates this character and the depressing nature of the characters in the following: "This describes the cool demeanor
