Breuer was considered to be one of the "last true functionalist architects" (Sharp PG) and he helped shift the bias of the Bauhaus from "Arts & Crafts" (PG) to "Arts & Technology" (PG). As Dennis Sharp explains Breuers work, "many pieces of modern, tubular steel furniture that are still in use today, including the Cesca and Wassily chairs by Breuer himself and still in production, can trace their origins back to the Breuer experiments of the mid-20s" (Sharp PG). Breuers early projects in the United States were mostly for domestic purposes, but in 1952 he worked with Nervi and Zehrfuss as the architect for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. It was this prestigious work that resulted in his carrying out his practice into the international field (Sharp PG). Born in Pecs, Hungary in 1902, Breuer studied at Allami Foreaiskola, at Pecs, and at the Bauhaus in Weimar, graduating from there in 1924. Breuer taught at the Bauhaus in Dessau until 1928. For three years afterwards he practiced in Berlin. After working for one year in London with F. R. S. Yorke, Breuer chose to emigrate to the United States.
