difficult to describe the experience. The armed forces are unlike any other organizations in the world, even those termed "paramilitary." The services provide everything for their members including food, clothing,
shelter and pay; in return, they demand complete loyalty, even up to and including the death of the service member in combat. There have been organized military forces in
existence throughout human history, but the great armies of the past are nothing like those of today. No matter how brave he is or how great a tactician, a Spartan
would be lost on the battlefield today. This is because the armed forces, like society everywhere, are evolving and changing. This paper discusses the history of the NCO; the shift
in responsibility during various historical eras; NCO empowerment; and the difference in responsibilities for NCOs in Vietnam and Iraq. Discussion The history of the NCO Corps: Todays NCO is a
"remnant of the organizational structure of the traditional European army, especially as it existed during the Hundred Years War" (Smith, 2010). At the time, most officers were aristocrats while the
troops were from the lower classes, and there was almost no interaction between the two; the NCOs served as a type of liaison between the two, as well as maintaining
"order in the camp" (Smith, 2010). NCOs were part of the American military from its inception; there were NCOs in Jamestown, "where the first American militia was formed" (Smith, 2010).
