This 25 page paper looks at the way in which the role, and the priorities, of trade unions have changed over time. The paper focuses on trade unions within the UK, but also uses the international examples. The paper starts by looking at the role and priorities of unions during the Victorian era, the changes in priorities, including the shift towards increased political involvement, and then towards increased involvement in pay negotiation. The changes are discussed in terms of both historic and social development, and a consideration of the way that some union relationships are gradually moving away from a conflict model to one of cooperation. the imbalance of power between employees and employers trying to improve the working conditions at work provided to employees by their employers. As this power imbalance was addressed, and unions were able to gain power and use that power for the benefit of their members the road expanded and changed. Instead of addressing inequalities and injustice in the workplace union for representing and members in seeking to gain the best deals possible for them. The general model adopted has often been warned of conflict, with the assumption that the employers and employees interests were not aligned. As the union power increased it could be argued that there was a potential for to be positively, as seen in World War II as well as in more controversial ways, such as the miners union strikes of the 1970s in the UK. Throughout the last century there have been changes, but there have also been some common elements in the way that the unions have operated; they have always wanted to be involved in the way pay deals have been brokered between employer and employees. This is place them in an increasingly difficult position as collectivism has declined and individualism has increased. The priorities of the unions may be argued as changing, with decreasing membership, holding onto every area in which they may be able to influence, and fighting for their survival. by considering the changing role in priorities of the trade unions insight into the employment relationship can be gained, and the way in which other aspects, such as collectivism from individualism and pay bargaining is taken place can also be understood. 2.
