more independent. Nations are known for individual characteristics and the "oriental" stereotypes are beginning to dissipate. In Asian countries however there is a sense of a different type of values
that distinguishes the region from other parts of the world. There is in fact currently a debate in terms of Asian values and what it means and some suggest that
it is a debate attached to Singapore alone (Subramaniam, 2000). Subramaniam (2000) writes: "...the Asian values discourse was part of a much larger process that involved the cultural construction
of a national identity: the process of nation building that began when the small island-state gained its independence in 1965" (p. 19). Since that time, it has been noted that
the quest for cultural values in Asia by their nations is not something new (Subramaniam, 2000). The author duly notes that Chinas May Fourth Movement is a single example but
the Meiji Restoration in Japan is another (Subramaniam, 2000). This quest for unique values is something important as Asian society changes over time. Although the quest has seemingly gone
on for some time, it appears that there is a new sense of cultural assertiveness in Asia (Subramaniam, 2000). There is also a sense of cultural nationalism and this is
viewed as an Asian challenge (Subramaniam, 2000). Another trend that has emerged is that of self-governance. There had for some time been the admonition that "Central Asians historically were never
capable of self-sovereignty or self-representation" (Kara, 1999, p. 321). As time goes one, individual nations become stronger and more independent. Of course, the identities of each Asian nation are unique.
