civil and religious freedom. At the expense of their blood, at the hazard of their fortunes, without the least charge to the country from which they removed, by unceasing labor,
and an unconquerable spirit, they effected settlements in the distant and inhospitable wilds of America..." (Wiles, 2002; art1895.asp). These are the words of history, the words that illustrated the determination
and the struggle for freedom in the United States. That sense of freedom is, in some ways, still the same today. However, in all truthfulness, we have come a long
way and had to make room for various freedoms for various peoples throughout the past few centuries. In the following paper we examine the evolution of that freedom in America.
The Changing Face of Freedom in America "When the Puritans migrated to New England over 100 years before this declaration was written, they sought the freedom to practice
their religion, but their goal was also to base their new government around their religion. When the Massachusetts Bay Colony was established in the 1630s, Governor John Winthrop saw the
settlement as a city upon a hill, where all citizens would uphold their covenants with God and be an example for the world" (Wiles, 2002; art1895.asp). It was necessary for
these new people to found a land where they would have such freedoms from Europe. However, at the same time, "The problem with this was that the Puritans were trying
to establish the same thing they had just escaped from-a state-sponsored religion. Women, and men who did not claim the Puritan faith, could not vote" and all the people paid
