is changing due to the need for different ways of maximising resources, cutting costs and also limiting liabilities as well as increasing flexibility. These needs of the employer have seen
a number of changes within the employment relationship. These include different forms of employment, such as increases in the number of part time employees and the use of contracted and
subcontracted staff, agencies for temporary workers and other forms of more individual contract as well as the way in which the relationship is managed and the demands placed ion the
employee, such as increased commitment and psychological labour and the use of more individualised bargaining. There is little doubt that in the UK there has been a shift in
the type of contracts used to employ workers. The increase in part time employment has been dramatic, especially in traditionally low paid jobs such as catering, cleaning and security (Allen
and Henry, 1997). The pattern is often seen as one pf increasing levels of employment as the part time jobs are also associaited with an increased level of women returning
to work and participating in the work place. However, a more in-depth examination reveals that these are not new jobs, but that there s a shift in the way employment
is taking place (Allen and Henry, 1997). In any cases the part time jobs are in those that were transferred from full time jobs where cutbacks were seen, and as
