Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. The extent to which human beings - and thereby the relationships in which they engage - are ever-evolving entities in both mind and body speaks to the notion that no two people in a single relationship remain exactly the same throughout that involvement. Just because a couple has been married forty-five years in what appears to be a harmonious union does not automatically mean each individual has remained unchanged for those past four-and-a-half decades; rather, the modifications in attitudes, beliefs, likes, dislikes, desires and goals have been both significant and life-changing. Couples who remain together throughout such monumental transformation do so either because the individuals have learned to adapt and grow with each change or because they become inert, ignoring the change and allowing it to crush the relationship's spirit. This latter situation ultimately renders the individuals as nonentities in their own union. Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" and Shaw's "The Girls in Their Summer Dresses" illustrate the more subtle elements of relationship changes and the larger-than-life impacts they have upon the individuals. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Hemingways Hills Like White Elephants and Shaws The Girls in Their Summer Dresses illustrate the more subtle elements of relationship changes and the larger-than-life impacts they have upon the individuals. Something as life-altering as aborting a baby - especially in an era and location that expressly forbade it - Moreover, changes, or rites of passage, can often cause a couple to grow apart, particularly when the individuals in the relationship discover that they are no longer traveling on parallel courses.
