or mediator in human services are many. The risks of dual relationships (those relationships in which the counselor is interacting with the client on both a professional level and
a personal level), in particular, are concerning. There are many other concerns surrounding both advocacy and mediation, however. These concerns revolve around protecting a clients interest using the
best means possible. This may require something as simple as helping a client find work. It may be as complex as protecting a clients rights in a hostile
work environment. Ethical codes are in place that dictate what is appropriate and what is inappropriate in the interactions that are necessitated. So too are various laws and
policies. Codes of Ethics are intended to serve as guidance in ethical deliberations (Pope, 2008). Understandably, the codes of ethics for many
fields prohibit dual-relationships (Moleski and Kiselica, 2005). The mental health field is an excellent example of why these prohibitions are in place. This field also provides many other
examples of the types of situations that might be encountered by client advocates and mediators. Obviously, the relationship that is formed between a
mental health advocate and his or her client is critical. This relationship can, in fact, be instrumental in determining either a positive or a negative outcome for the client.
Dual relationships (relationships that extend across the professional lines to familial, social, financial, business or even close personal relationships with a client) endanger the advocacy relationship. Dual relationships
