is both rewarding and challenging. This paper discusses three aspects of managing a global workforce: culture as a system; culture as meaning; and culture as adaptation. Discussion Cultural adaptation takes many forms, some of them surprising, but all of them reminding us that things are not always what they seem. The literature provides a striking example of the way in which misconceptions arise and are then used to perpetuate stereotypes. The author describes a scene that is often observed in Southern California: its early morning and a pickup truck, driving slowly, approaches a group of men standing on a street corner (Middleton, 2002). The driver exchanges a few words with one of them; he shakes his head "no" and the truck moves off (Middleton, 2002). He repeats this several times, until at last some of the men get into the truck and leave (Middleton, 2002). This is clearly someone offering migrants a days work and the question is whether those who refuse are lazy; if they are escaping from a "labor scavenger" or if something else is happening (Middleton, 2002). The answer is the latter. From an outsiders point of view, its either lazy workers or a predatory exploiter, but the truth is that the men on the street corner have every reason to be there: some are just getting home from the night shift; others will begin the day shift in an hour; some are waiting for the bus, one is going to the doctor, etc (Middleton, 2002). They all have legitimate reasons for being on the street at that time, but an outsider would most likely see them as lazy and shiftless bums who wont take work when its offered, thus perpetuating the stereotype ...
