The development of products was a major driver with consumer looking for feature rich replacement units, shortening the lifecycle of the existing product. This has been to the benefit of all handset manufacturers and created a very competitive environment. Nokia The dominant supplier is the Finnish company Nokia in terms of the global market share, although the global market share did decrease in 2003 compared to 2002 falling to 34.7% down from 35.1% (Gonsalves, 2004). However, the pattern was not negative as Nokia managed to take the lead in the competitive US market, taking this from Motorola (Gonsalves, 2004).The loss of market share was due to falls in sales in western Europe, where Nokia remained the number one supplier, but with a lower lead. The loss was mostly to a number of the smaller competitors rather than the other dominant players. The market share has fallen in 2004. According to figures released n the 9th of September 2004 for the second quarter of 2004 Nokia had dropped to a market share level of 29.7% compared to 35.6% for the same quarter the previous year (Tech Europe, 2004) However, this was a slight recovery as in the first quarter market share had fallen to 28.9% (Tech Europe, 2004). Nokia are suffering due to the lifecycle of the brand and the need for renewal that was hampered by limited product mixes.
