In looking at the collapse of the Asian economies there are many factors that came together to form this domino effect that spread form country to country. There are many theories form over regulation to under regulation, but to understand the easy in which it was the interaction of different factors a range of route causes need to be considered. The crisis may have occurred in 1996, but there were signals of forthcoming trouble in 1996. The region had grown mainly on the back of export markets, in 1996 growth of the exports began to slow down (Ushikoshi, 1998). Some believed that this was a danger sign, other that the economies were just cooling don after high growth rates and this was part of a natural cycle (Ushikoshi, 1998). The demand that had been seen in the area had lead to an over valuation of the currency in the area. This was seen with the Thai Bhat, which may be seen as triggering the crisis. The Thai baht was overvalues in the way it was controlled. The actual value was pegged to a basket of currencies. However, in reality there was a closer link to the dollar due to the weighting and currencies in that basket. From 1995 the Baht had been appreciation in value. The higher the value the more difficult it is to export, as the process is comparatively higher. This lead to the fall in the level of exports from Thailand. This precipitated the crisis.
