war which is an ever present element of human history, as states have become larger and technology developed the manifestations of the conflict paradigm m has adapted. Many areas of
human development have evolved, with former behaviors being seen as irrational and illogical and mankind believing they have overcome the primitive behaviors of the past. While fears and superstitions may
have reduced in their apparent influence, the desire and continuation of conflict has not become a lesser issue. The causes of war
are often seen as extremely complex, there is little doubt that a major contributory cause for war is that of nationalism, this has been seen in many wars, from World
War One to Vietnam and more recently Iraq, where it is nationalism that drives the resistance to and support for the allied forces. However, it may not only be nationalism
that is a force, a more primal force may be that of Social Darwinism, the survival of the fittest. By looking at war and its causes both of these hypotheses
may be supported. Nationalism was seen clearly with the First World War. The spark that brought the political tensions to a head
was the assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne; Archduke Francis Ferdinand. This occurred on June 28th 1914, the assassin Givrilo Princip was believed to have been linked
with a Serbian terrorist group, this resulted in the conclusion being drawn that it was the Serbian government behind the assassination and issues of nationalism came to the fore in
the immediate motivations for action. This triggered a war between Hungary and Serbia, a war that heralded the beginning of the First World War. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand may
