While terrorist attacks had transpired before, they were minor in comparison and did not even come close to the magnitude of the most recent attacks. Not only were
thousands of people killed, but the entire country was shocked and horrified and the randomness became extremely frightening. For the first time, people realized that the possibility existed that
anytime, anywhere, they could potentially become a victim of a terrorist attack. The question "why" was unavoidable in the days and weeks
following the attacks. Who could do such a thing and why would they want to? While the questions were at first reactionary, they were important questions, and even
more important are the answers to those questions, which continue to be formulated. Understanding the who and why of the terrorist attacks gives us far greater insight into the
entirety of terrorism, and gives us important information about how to combat such actions in the future. There is no
question that the terrorist attacks of September 11th were as serious as it gets. The death toll was horrific and the rescue effort so perilous that many died in
the aftermath of the actual attacks. The men, women, and children on the planes who had to die with such knowing horror of their fate and the scores of
families who would forever be changed by this crisis. This is the reality of terrorism, and this is indeed a serious issue. Because of the immensity of the
issue, it is important for the government to put all of its power behind this investigation, and to determine what can be done to prevent and/or mitigate terrorism.
