The problem drinker soon finds that alcoholism affects the relationships with friends, family and co-workers as well. There is a strain placed upon relationships and stress placed on friends and family can sometimes be irreparable. The chance of losing a job is always a major concern for the alcoholic as well. The health problems related to alcoholism are numerous. Excessive amounts of alcohol damage the liver and brain and cause other dangerous health problems including malnutrition and vitamin deficiency (Hwang 1352). The symptoms of alcoholism are many and varied. When there is a pattern of drinking that is accompanied by any of several problems during a twelve-month period, it is cause for concern. Some of the associated problems would include the failure to fulfill major work, school or home responsibilities; drinking in situations that place people in danger, such as driving a car or operating machinery; recurring alcohol-related legal problems such as being arrested while under the influence or for physically hurting someone while drunk; continued drinking despite having ongoing relationship problems that are caused by or worsened by the effects of alcohol (Hwang 1352). The symptoms of alcoholism include some or all of many symptoms. A strong craving for alcohol and loss of control and inability to stop drinking once begun are symptoms that might be present. Suffering from withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after a period of heavy drinking, and needing increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel "high" are also commonly associated with the person who is in the throes of alcohol addiction (Hwang 1352).
