On August 22, 1831, a band of slaves, led by lay preacher Nat Turner, entered a house in Southampton County, Virginia and killed five members of a family. This was the beginning of a slave uprising that was to become known as Nat Turner's rebellion. This 8 page paper reviews the life of Nat Turner and his role in the rebellion. Bibliography included.

that she was forced to march for one thousand miles to the Atlantic. Whether she was African royalty or not will never be known. It is known that she
was stolen from her homeland as a teen and renamed Nancy when she was sold to Benjamin Turner in January of 1799 in Norfolk, Virginia. Little is known about his
father other than he was a second-generation slave. Some genealogical studies have suggested that he ran away soon after Nats birth and eventually traveled made it to Liberia. Although
it was illegal in Virginia to teach a slave to read, Nat learned to read and write as a small boy. Slave-owners were afraid that if their slaves could
read they would soon learn of abolitionists revolutionary and dangerous ideas. Nat Turner himself said that the alphabet had been brought to him in a vision, and that he
learned the letters when he later found the same symbols burned into leaves on the ground. The most likely but less poetic version is that his masters family taught
him. However the education came about, when his owner, Benjamin Turner, found out Nat could read, he encouraged it -- as long as he only read the Bible. Both his
mother and his paternal grandmother, Bridget, taught him about the land they were from and his African heritage. Bridget was also his primary caregiver until he reached his teens.
Bridget, had become a Christian and passed on the religion to Nat. As he grew up, Nat Turner was possessed by the spirit world of both his African ancestors and
