for a society that seeks it. Another is for social control. There are various other reasons too, but these three seem to be dominant, particularly when it comes to the
death penalty issue. If the death penalty does have a deterrent effect, and that is arguable, it would certainly be justified. Similarly, social control appears to be a good reason
to end the life of another human being. After all, if murderers stop their deadly deeds because of a punishment, then the society is well served. Retribution however is not
as well accepted. In respect to the death penalty debate, there are heated arguments. Many religious and spiritual citizens do not like the idea of putting any living being
to death. Even if a murderer seems to deserve it, and it will help society, they simply cannot fathom making the ultimate decision about another human beings life. One would
think that religious leaders would be opposed to such a severe penalty. Surprisingly, the Catholic Church for the most part has sided with the states right to implement the death
penalty. Of course, the position of the Catholic Church on this issue has always been somewhat foggy. It is not the case that the church flip flops but it seems
to skirt the issue. The Church does not order deaths, but the church often looks the other way. Despite the general manner in which the church has treated capital punishment,
it seems as if the position has changed. Up until changes developed in the Catholic Church during the 1990s, it seems as if
the Catholic Church would not oppose the death penalty. If it was not somehow involved in the process, the religious leaders would not say anything to oppose such a plan.
