same sex marriages are the last hold out. As we head into the new millenium it becomes increasingly evident that gays and lesbians are
here to stay. Protected under the federal hate-crime statutes they are now free to move about openly in society without fear of reprisal. As the last wall of discrimination
begins to crumble society turns itself to the issue of same sex marriages. While gays and lesbians are allowed to adopt children, buy property jointly and many other things they
are not allowed to marry in the eyes of the law. Many churches however have designed and implemented ceremonies for same sex marriages. While they are not legally recognized they
are a public profession of love and commitment between two women or two men. The ceremonies are done with all the pomp and circumstance of a heterosexual wedding. Families are
invited, there is a solemn church ceremony and a reception afterwards. Several Christian churches have already broken through this last discriminatory practice and allowed same sex marriages to occur
within their buildings, but the Catholic Church has held steadfastly to the belief that it is wrong and to condone it would be going against God. The pressure is on
in these times of change and forward movement. Will the Catholic Church change its stance? That remains to be seen. This is like every other controversial issue the church has
faced. There are many sides and many viewpoints that must meld together for a final decision. The student should then move into a discussion
about the two sides of the issue that include those for the unions and those against them and the reasons for each side.
