belief system defines its parameters and the fundamental elements of what make a Christian a Catholic. First and foremost, Catholics believe that the Church was founded by Jesus Christ,
specifically indicating the leadership of Peter in regards to the apostles (Madrid, 2005). Matthew 16:18 states "on this rock (meaning Peter), I will build my church." The basic religious belief
for Roman Catholics is that God entered into the world through the Incarnation of his Son, Jesus of Nazareth (Piggin, 2005). Catholic belief states that Jesus founded only one church
(Madrid, 2005). The Catholic belief system also encompasses the concept that Christ instigated the founding of the Church through his selection of his apostles, which is indicated in Acts 1:20,
and equates obeying the apostles, and their successors, as comparable with obeying Jesus (Madrid, 2005). As this suggests, Catholics believe that the Church constitutes the highest authority of earth, which
is substantiated by Matthew 18:17 (Madrid, 2005). Catholics do not believe in one of the fundamental principles of Protestantism, which is a concept promoted by Martin Luther at the
time of the Reformation, which dictates that the Bible alone offers teachings that are valid (Madrid, 2005). Catholics reject this concept for a variety of reasons, which include the fact
that such a teaching was not passed on by the apostles. Also, Second Thessalonians 2:15 commands that Christians should maintain both the written and oral teachings of Jesus (Madrid, 2005).
