using this paper properly! James Grover Thurber was born on December 8, 1894 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the second son born to Charles and Mary Fisher Thurber. His
father was apparently not very successful in his venture and his mother was reportedly a very strong-willed woman. In fact, it has been suggested that his parents provided the models
for Thurbers story "Little Man" as well as the strong-willed women characters in his work (Contemporary Literary Criticism). Thurber suffered a serious injury as a youngster while playing a game
with his older brother that blinded him in one eye. He eventually lost the sight in his other eye and was blind by 1951 (Contemporary Literary Criticism, 2001).
Thurber began writing in high school and continued writing while attending Ohio State University. He left college before graduation and went to work for the U. S. State Department in
Washington and transferred to the U. S. Embassy in Paris. He was a code clerk. In 1920, he returned to Columbus from Paris and worked as a reporter for the
Columbus Dispatch. Two years later, he married Althea Adams. Their only child, a daughter was born in 1931 (Contemporary Literary Criticism). It was in the 1920s that Thurber began
his career as a writer of humorous fiction, writing as a freelancer. He returned to Paris in 1925 working as a rewrite person for the Paris edition of the Chicago
Tribune. He returned to the United States in 1926. A meeting with E. B. White in 1926 changed his life when White got him a job at the newly founded
