the region known as Catalonia there are more than 6 million people and the city of Barcelona, along with surrounding areas, possesses almost 70% of that population. "With almost 4
million people, Barcelona has one of the largest metropolitan areas of any Mediterranean city" (Barcelonas History, 2003). The following paper examines this intriguing and historical area by first discussing how
the Catalan culture has influenced the development of Barcelona and then by discussing the architecture within Barcelona. Catalan Culture "Barcelonas history is closely linked to that of Catalonia.
However, while Catalonias history as a national body is considered to start in the 9th century AD, there is archaeological evidence of a much earlier Barcelona" (Barcelona Online, 2003). We
begin with the disintegration of the Roman Empire which came with "the invasion of the Visigoths who occupied Barcino in 415 A.D. and renamed the city Barcinona. Three hundred years
later at the beginning of the 8th century the moors conquered Barcelona during their drive from northern Africa to the south of France" (Barcelonas History, 2003). Then one hundred years
later the Franks arrived. and "established a strong military presence in what became known as the Spanish Mark, the front line of a constant battle between the Christian kingdoms of
the North with the Arabs. This conflict eventually evolved into what became known as the Reconquest" (Barcelonas History, 2003). It was at about this point in time that the
