was, and is, considered to be a genre of literature that is gloomy and dark and has no real development in any positive manner. In light of this it was a novel that set the stage for a new form of novel, the gothic novel. It stood as a guide for many novels that would follow, all trying to create a gothic feel and a gothic plot that was dark and foreboding. His novel continued to hold prestige and influence in the world of literature through the 18th century. In the 19th century, however, came new writers with new perspectives. Although many were still copying the gothic genre, some were branching out. One of those writers was Jane Austen. Her work, "Northanger Abbey," is a novel with gothic qualities, but it is also a satirical comment on the gothic style novel. The following paper first examines "The Castle of Otranto" in relationship to its gothic style, and then examines Austens novel in the same context. The paper argues that Austens work is a clear parody of Walpoles gothic style. The Castle of Otranto In the Preface to the First Edition of Walpoles work the author notes that, "There is no bombast, no similes, flowers, digressions, or unnecessary descriptions. Everything tends directly to the catastrophe." We are informed that "Never is the readers attention relaxed. The rules of the drama are almost observed throughout the conduct of the piece" (Walpole (Preface to the First Edition)). The preface also makes clear reference to the fact that the story is filled with darkness, stating, "Terror, the authors principal engine, prevents the story from ever languishing; and it is so often contrasted by pity, that the mind is kept up in a constant vicissitude of interesting passions.
