great deal of darkness, secrecy, betrayal, and is set in a castle that is equally as dark and foreboding and mysterious. Many argue that it is perhaps a story that
is filled with far too many "mysterious" elements and has no real point or significance. However, when we see that the story has not truly been out of print since
its first publication indicates that the public finds something incredibly real and powerful in this story by Horace Walpole. The following paper examines how it is more than a story
of excesses and also discusses the significance of the image of the ghost. The Castle of Otranto In understanding how the story is not merely a simple tale
of excessive dark and gothic descriptions we see that the main character is a powerful one that we do not like necessarily. He is a man who is truly only
concerned with continuing his line and has no real feelings for other people. He simply wants what he wants without caring about others. This, for one, makes us intrigued and
happy with the arrival of the strangers who actually seem to be ghostly in some respects. These strangers are threatening the position of the main character, although he does
not know it and does not know why. But, as the reader, who is not emotionally attached to any of the characters, we see the strangers as a relief from
the tyranny of sorts played out by the primary character. And, as noted, although we do not necessarily reel close to any of the characters, we do recognize the pious
and righteous nature of the three women in the story: Hippolita, Matilda, and Isabella. They contrast against Manfred and thus we are offered a very stable balance to the story
