therapeutic process in order to address the manifestations of childhood issues in Johns adult life. Johns issues do not simply extend from his strict nuclear family and the distribution
of roles by his parents. They also relate to the fact that Johns decisions have been made for him throughout his life and even his efforts to gain control
have not demonstrated gains in terms of his own sense of self-worth. Johns loss of control in choices in his marriage referenced
issues in his childhood regarding lack of control, and up until that time John appeared to have been making efforts to distinguish his own capabilities in relationships. It is
not surprising, then, that John focused on relationships with others who were not strong people or who had physical or psychological flaws. The fact that his wife is missing
fingers, that his ex-girlfriend was a poorly controlled diabetic, and that his close friends were often alcoholics reflect the desire on Johns part to have an upper hand in relationships.
This is an important element to keep in mind in referencing the concepts of self-worth and personal dignity in the Rogerian model because his self-esteem is based on his
ability (or inability) to maintain this upper hand in relationships. When his wife made choices in their marriage that did not reflect great consideration for his choices, and when
it became evident that he no longer had the upper hand, Johns world fell apart. John was unable to function on a number of levels because of this loss
