Therefore, it is important to assess the major issues relating to this case and to thoroughly examine the different perspectives from which this case could be discerned. First of all, the major issue which presents itself is that of whether or not there should have been medical intervention. In this particular case there was, but not because the parents wanted it and in the end, the weaker twin did die, just as expected. Because the parents preferred to let "God decide" the fate of their daughters, a judge stepped in and ruled that surgery was necessary since it was inevitable that they would both likely die without surgery (Veenker, 2000). Jodie possessed the heart and lungs, and therefore lived after surgery while Mary died very shortly after surgery since she was cut off from her source of oxygen (Veenker, 2000). But did the British judge have the right to step in and make this very important decision - one which turned out to be life-altering? My personal opinion is that the judge did indeed have the right. I happen to think that the parents of these children were acting irresponsibly. There is no question that the decision which was before them was overwhelming, and one which would haunt any parent. How does one make such a judgment about the lives of their children? Not easily. However, given the fact that both of their lives were in danger and the ultimate reality that neither was likely to live, I believe it was the responsibility of the parents ...
