attempt ("Brady" A7). Since that time, James Brady and his wife have made gun control a primary issue in their lives. This bill ironically stemmed from a Republican presidency, ironic
in that the party is generally pro-Second Amendment. The bill was passed and the Brady Act requires a five-day waiting period and background check for those who want to
buy guns (Levy PG). And while Brady to an extent prompted the gun control fever in the United States once again, no one could have predicted that rash of school
shootings that would surface in the 1990s. Even before children began to take guns to school, there were other incidents involving guns where the strong arm policies of the U.S.
have come under fire. For example, there was WACO and Ruby Ridge, incidents where the U.S. took action because they heard--in each case-- that a group of people were stockpiling
weapons. In some way, the eighties took on characteristics of 1950s McCarthyism as law enforcement agents of the United States seemed to go above and beyond the call of duty.
But when new FBI director Louis Freeh took over, he said that he would never use tactics used in those botched jobs such as blasting high decibel recordings to induce
stress and arming robots with shotguns (Hanchette PG). And while these things did occur in Waco and Ruby Ridge, they prompted gun advocates to fight even harder for their cause.
In other words, common sense gun control was not acceptable for those who rigidly waved the second amendment like a banner. Advocates for guns cite Ruby Ridge and Waco as
every reason to own a gun, but it really should give every person in the country a reason why they should not. These governmental incidents, like it or not, were
