sleep, or suffer. Some pet owners cling to the animal, denying that it needs to be done, but euthanizing the animal is generally agreed to be the humane thing to
do. What is it to be humane anyway? It seems that allowing an animal to suffer is inhumane. It is a creed the hunters live by as well as veterinarians.
Some people put animals out of their misery simply because they cannot take care of an injured pet or because the pet would require prohibitively expensive treatments. That is seen
as acceptable by society, at least for non-human creatures. When it comes to human life it seems , it is a different matter. It is thought that humans should
suffer if in fact their lives will be saved. Saving a human life is perhaps the most important thing in the universe, at least according to society. However, much of
the reason for that goes to religion and the idea that human life cannot be discarded. Assisted suicide is considered murder. In a society that values human life, it is
difficult to convince the majority that sometimes, it is more humane to put someone out of their misery than to keep them alive. The criteria of course is more difficult
to determine. There is always the argument that a patient may want to die because he or she is in so much pain, but will be grateful if they survive
when that pain is just a memory. Anyway, humans forget pain, a phenomenon that allows the human race to go on, or at least prompt mothers to have more children.
