of course the jury only makes recommendations, it is something important to the system as a whole. Does the U.S. want to be known as a nation that takes this drastic eye for an eye approach, or does it want to tone done its methods of handling heinous criminals? On one side is the idea that justice can only be served by this strong punishment, but on the other is the notion of humanity and the fact that juries are fallible. In fact, the best case against the death penalty is that no one can ever be certain as to whether or not the jury is right. The first reason usually given in support of the ultimate punishment is for the sake of retribution. That is, if someone commits a deadly crime, they deserve a similar fate. The death penalty is sometimes not nearly as harsh as the crimes they committed as the punishment is reserved for the worst offenders. One can imagine that putting someone to death by lethal injection is not as bad as the individuals actions if they involved pedophilia, rape or murder. The families of murder victims often wait for a verdict of death and believe that should be the case. This is because they want justice for their loved one. They do not want to see a murderer enjoy even another hour of life because of what they had done to the victim. In many ways, one can understand how the victims families feel as well as how society views it. At the same time, there is a sense that the argument for retribution is tied solely to emotion and is void of logic. It attempts to rectify the situation but never truly does.
